The future of organic starts with you.

About.jpg

We started our own co-op so you could put a face to a name.

For decades, we have been producing the milk found on the shelf at your local grocery store. We founded Western Organic Family Farms Cooperative to support the real people just like you making quality dairy products every day.

We produce the same high quality milk as larger co-ops with one key difference: Our dedication to families, farms, and a community creating organic and organic A2/A2 products. We’re one of few cooperatives in the U.S. producing organic A2/A2 milk. We pride ourselves on being stewards of the land delivering the best product possible. Our milk is certified by USDA, Non-GMO Project, and Validus.

Our animal husbandry practices and pasture-based approach are steeped in generations of family farming. We’re here to supply quality dairy products you can trust from our farm to your family. Let us share what makes our dairies different.

Milk. As Nature Intended.

We are the 4th generation to run CR Griffith Dairy. The dairy started in 1918 by Casey’s great grandfather, Ingvard Christensen, who had immigrated from Denmark. He and his family operated the dairy until 1950 when his son Ernie bought it from him. In 1985 when he retired, his daughter Anne and husband Mike took over. They learned about becoming organic and the benefits it provided for their dairy cows and the environment and in 2006 became a NOP certified organic dairy. After spending a combined 27 years in the dairy manufacturing industry, we took over the operation of the dairy when Mike and Anne retired in 2016.

In 2018, we saw the need for consumer confidence in where their milk comes from, and decided to obtain Validus Certification and became Non-GMO Project Verified. We are among the most pasture-based farms in the country, which means our cows graze on pastures more than most cows. This gives our small herd of 100 milking cows a natural diet and free-range on the farm. For the last two years, our entire herd has been on grazing pasture all day long, except for 15 days and when they were in the milk barn. This is a Gold Standard for any grass-fed program. You just do not get that type of dedication to your cows’ comfort and well-being on any large dairies, or anywhere else in the country. We are the “Small Family Farm”.

We have three children, Caleigh, Alex, and Jamison. The girls are both active in raising and naming of the calves, and in their free time, they visit and play with the calves and young heifers. Both show animals at the local county fair. Jamison is a very active boy that loves being outside and refers to the cows as “moo’s”.

As a young boy growing up I spent many after schools, vacations, and summers at my Papa John's dairy. I grew up to love the animals and being part of the family dairy. As a nine-year-old boy in 1992, I started in 4-H with my first show heifer named Maggie. Maggie and I stayed together through my years into high school and FFA and we excelled in the show ring.

Over the next 11 years, we gathered 30 animals to start our own dairy in 2003, several of which were part of my show ring. As my family grew, so did my herd: We currently milk 450 cows. My wife Lindsey and I now manage around 750 organic acres that we run our animals on and they graze. We make our winter feed on this same land. Our four daughters Quincy, Taisley, Laney, and Bristol all enjoy the outdoors, feeding the animals with their mom and dad, and riding in the tractors while we make feed and farm the fields.

As fifth-generation dairymen, dairying is in our blood. When the opportunity arose for us to produce organic milk in central Texas, we jumped at the prospect. We’re located in the town of Dublin within Erath county, the largest dairying county in the state. Strategically located just 110 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth and 140 miles from Austin, our milk is a short distance from major markets.

Our land base has grown to over 1,800 acres of green rolling hills, where we put in the hard work of improving the land and developing a large organic support base locally which didn’t exist at the time. With wide open spaces and wonderful weather for growing crops, we’ve learned to manage our operation with the more unforgiving nature of the Texas climate, having ventured from coastal California where today our son runs the dairy with his wife and two daughters. We’re no strangers to hard work and determination, so we set about to make a success of our new venture.

Continuing in the family tradition of farming sustainably for future generations, we run Grand Canyon Dairy with our daughter, son-in-law, and their two children. Our wonderful staff works hard every day to keep our cows healthy and provide them with the nutritional feed we produce on our farm. We continue spreading the value of farming organically and share our belief that organic A2/A2 milk produced from cows managed organically is beneficial to families everywhere.

Our third-generation family farm nestled in the Eel River Valley of Ferndale, California is part of a deep history of dairying that has helped this town earn its reputation as “The Cream City.” Just miles away from the Pacific Ocean and set between the redwood forests, our 730-acre farmland has a climate perfectly suited for dairying, with rich valley soil and lush green pastures to feed our cows.

After dairying with my father for 20+ years, my wife and I purchased the dairy in 1994. We were the first dairy in the Ferndale Valley to transition to organic in 2000. It was a natural fit, as we are stewards of our land committed to the health and well-being of our cows in a way that is consistent with organic practices. With three children who were all very involved, we couldn’t imagine doing anything else, so we embraced the values and ideals of organic farming. In doing so we joined a community of like-minded people achieving similar goals.

We became aware of A2/A2 milk about 10 years ago while visiting a friend with Guernsey cows. We did research on the A2 protein in milk and saw that although there wasn’t anyone producing it yet in the United States, we knew it would be the way of the future. We feel that delivering A2/A2 milk is just one more step to enhance what we started back when we went organic. Organic farming practices are essential to ensure the sustainability of farming for generations to come and the optimum way to provide wholesome, healthy and high-quality organic products to our consumers.
